Japanese CACAO Incense

Limited quantities available.
Our first collection from Japan has arrived.
Character: this is not a sweet cocoa or chocolate fragrance. Here, CACAO reveals itself as a subtle, abstract interpretation — warm, dry and understated. Far from a dessert-like scent, it evokes a sense of stillness, woody notes, a delicate wisp of smoke and comforting depth.

Japanese CACAO incense is crafted for unhurried rituals at home — a quiet moment when fragrance becomes more than a background scent; it becomes a mindful gesture.
These are perhaps some of the most intriguing incense creations we have ever encountered. And rightly so — they are crafted by a husband-and-wife duo devoted to the art of fragrance in their atelier, nestled in the mountains of Japan’s Gunma Prefecture. At first, the idea of incense inspired by chocolate or cacao may seem unexpected. Yet the moment a stick is lit, CACAO invites us to rediscover what incense can truly be.
Cacao forms the heart of this composition, complemented by notes of dried fruits and cypriol, also known as nagarmotha — a prized aromatic ingredient in India, extracted from the fragrant roots of the plant. Yet the result is far from a straightforward, sweet chocolate fragrance. It is a layered, subtle olfactory ritual that begins somewhere in the memory of cacao and gradually unfolds into a deeper, almost sacred stillness.
These are the kind of incense sticks one wishes to burn slowly — for oneself, for the home, or in the company of those with whom a rare fragrance discovery is worth sharing. A small Japanese treasure, to keep or to give, for moments when life calls for a slower pace.
Tokyo Kodo is a Japanese incense maison — an atelier where the ancient art of Japanese incense meets the refined traditions of French perfumery. Bringing together centuries-old Japanese incense craftsmanship and the art of French fragrance composition, the house approaches every creation with meticulous attention to detail — from the selection of raw materials and the development of each scent to its production. Its heritage traces back to Nakahori, a company established in 1935 and specialising in incense and objects associated with Japanese temple traditions. And the smoke becomes delicate, ever-changing, alive… Shaped by the space, the air, the season and the moment.
Handcrafted niche incense invites you on a delicate olfactory journey through the warmth of cacao, subtle notes of dried fruits and the serene character of natural woods.
